Marcie Lawrence
Where are you from?
Brooklyn, NY (Bedstuy Do or Die!)
Company / Position:
Freelancer at self :)
How did you get into design?
I have always done "design", as a hobby on the side, or small projects for friends, but I really didn't start doing it as a profession until I went to grad school for graphic design at SVA (School of Visual Arts). After that my first job out of school was at Little Brown, Books for Young Readers. I really found my passion there, and loved book design. It was a long circuitous route, but I got into it pretty much by accident. But, I really fell in love with it. I was hooked.
Favorite book or current read and why?
Oh how I wish I had the time!
Tell us a surprising fact about you?
I love to bake and used to sell pies out of a cart in Martha's Vineyard
What did you learn about publishing that you wish you knew before?
Being a designer means exercising your right brain as much as your left! Being creative is really important, but I also had to learn quickly that I needed to make sure that I stayed on top of all those little organizational details as well.
How do you over come a creative block?
You have to step away and give your mind a break! Make some tea and stare out a window, do some yoga, go to the park.
